Yellow beryl, known as heliodor, is a variety of the mineral beryl that is distinguished by its bright yellow color. The most important deposits of heliodor are found in Brazil, Namibia, Nigeria, Madagascar, and Russia, with Brazil being one of the main producers.
Heliodor shares many characteristics with other varieties of beryl, such as emerald and aquamarine. It has a hardness of 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, making it quite durable and suitable for use in jewelry. This hardness allows jewelry made with heliodor to be worn daily without much concern for damage.
Heliodor is especially appreciated for its clarity and brilliance. High-quality gems have exceptional transparency and a vitreous luster that enhances their appeal. They are cut into various shapes and sizes to be used in rings, necklaces, earrings, and other fine jewelry pieces. Jewelers often prefer cuts that maximize the depth of color and brilliance of the stone.
Historically, heliodor has not been as famous as its relatives, emerald and aquamarine, but it has gained popularity in recent years due to its unique beauty and durability. Inclusions, which are common in many types of gems, are less frequent in heliodor, contributing to its clarity and purity.
