Shape tells the story: how to read a mineral by its crystal habit

When you hold a mineral in your hand, its outer shape is no accident. It's the signature of how it formed: how fast it grew, how much room it had, what fluid it was born from. Mineralogists call this characteristic shape the crystal habit, and learning to read it lets you work out a stone's story without knowing any chemistry. In this walkthrough we'll teach you to look at five common habits and understand what each one is telling you.

What is crystal habit? It's the external shape a mineral takes as it grows. A single mineral —quartz, for instance— can appear as transparent columns, as clusters of spheres, or as a shapeless mass. What changes isn't the composition, but the conditions under which it crystallised.

Botryoidal: clusters born from a fluid

The botryoidal habit (from the Greek bótrys, a bunch of grapes) forms surfaces of clustered spheres. It appears when the mineral substance precipitates out of a fluid inside a cavity, rather than growing from a single point with flat faces. Each sphere is actually a fan of microscopic fibres growing radially outward.

What it's telling you: "I was born from a mineral-rich liquid that slowly dripped or seeped into a hollow in the rock."

Examples in the shop:

  • Grape chalcedony (the famous "grape agate")
  • Malachite, with its concentric green bands
  • Kidney-shaped (reniform) hematite, with its bubbly surface

Prismatic: columns of time and space

When a mineral grows in elongated prisms, with flat faces and well-defined edges, it's telling you it enjoyed two luxuries: space to develop and time to do it slowly. This usually happens inside veins and fractures where fluids circulated, or in cavities where the crystal could stretch out unobstructed.

What it's telling you: "I grew slowly, with plenty of room to form clean faces."

Examples in the shop:

  • Quartz (rock crystal), with its hexagonal prisms ending in a point
  • Tourmaline, in columns striated lengthwise
  • Beryl (aquamarine, emerald), in prisms with a hexagonal cross-section

Druse: the lining of a geode

A druse is a surface carpeted with tiny crystals, all pointing outward from a common base. It's what you see when you open a geode: the crystals grew toward the inside of a hollow cavity, lining its walls. The slower and steadier the process, the sharper the points.

What it's telling you: "I lined the hollow of a bubble or cavity; what you see is its inner face."

Examples in the shop:

  • Amethyst geodes
  • White quartz druses
  • Agate geodes with a crystallised cavity at the centre

Massive: when there was no room

The massive habit is the absence of any recognisable shape: a compact mass, with no visible faces or points. It doesn't mean the mineral "didn't crystallise", but that it did so crammed in, with no space to develop faces. Its crystals do exist, but they're so small or so compressed against one another that you can't make them out with the naked eye.

What it's telling you: "I grew with no free space, surrounded by rock on every side."

Examples in the shop:

  • Rose quartz, almost always in a mass with no faces
  • Lapis lazuli, sodalite and other ornamental rocks
  • Jaspers of every variety

Dendritic: patterns that look like plants

The dendritic habit (from the Greek déndron, a tree) forms branching patterns reminiscent of ferns, moss or little trees. They aren't plant fossils, even though they look like them: they're minerals —usually manganese or iron oxides— that seeped through the finest cracks in a rock and crystallised along those channels, tracing tree-like figures.

What it's telling you: "I seeped through microfissures in the rock and grew following their path."

Examples in the shop:

  • Moss agate and dendritic agate
  • Pyrolusite dendrites (manganese oxide) on limestone
  • "Landscape stone" with mineral landscapes traced across it
