In Greek mythology, the history of the amethyst is related to the figure of Dionysus, the god of wine and drunkenness. According to legend, there was a beautiful mortal named Amethystos, who was a devoted follower of Artemis, the goddess of the hunt and protector of maidens.

One day, Dionysus got angry with Artemis and decided to take revenge on her by provoking the tigers to attack the next maiden who crossed her path. Amethystos, fearing for his life, begged Artemis to protect him. The goddess, moved by his devotion and purity, transformed Amethystos into a pure white crystal statue to save him from the attack of tigers.

When Dionysus realized Artemis's action and that her revenge would not take place, he felt remorse and sadness for having caused so much suffering. So, he spilled a cup of wine on the statue of Amethystos as a sign of apology and repentance. The wine stained the white crystal and transformed it into a beautiful violet-colored crystal, which we now know as amethyst.

From that moment on, the amethyst was considered a precious stone with protective powers against drunkenness and the harmful effects of alcohol. It was believed that wearing an amethyst or drinking from goblets made of this crystal could prevent intoxication and keep the mind clear.
