Platonic Solids in Mineral: Geometric Perfection Shaped by Nature

What are Platonic solids?

Platonic solids are convex polyhedra whose faces are identical regular polygons, and where the same number of faces meet at each vertex. A solid is called convex when all of its angles point outward, and any straight line drawn between two internal points remains inside the shape. In simple terms: no dents, no hollows—just pure outward symmetry.

Only five solids meet these strict criteria, which is why they’re considered the purest forms in three-dimensional geometry:

• Tetrahedron – 4 triangular faces. Represents fire.
• Cube or hexahedron – 6 square faces. Linked to earth.
• Octahedron – 8 triangular faces. Symbol of air.
• Icosahedron – 20 triangular faces. Related to water.
• Dodecahedron – 12 pentagonal faces. Connected to ether or the universe.

A bit of history

These solids weren’t discovered by Plato, even though they’re named after him. The ancient Pythagoreans already knew them in the 6th century BCE. But it was Plato, in the 4th century BCE, who gave them a cosmological meaning by linking each shape to one of the classical elements. Since then, Platonic solids have symbolized harmony, order, and perfection.

Later, during the Renaissance, figures like Leonardo da Vinci and mathematician Luca Pacioli illustrated them in the treatise De Divina Proportione, blending art, mathematics, and mysticism.

What about the sphere and the merkaba?

Though not part of the original five Platonic solids, the sphere and the merkaba are often included for their symbolic power and harmonious aesthetics.

The sphere is the most balanced shape of all: no edges, no vertices, infinite symmetry. It represents wholeness, unity, and timeless perfection.

The merkaba consists of two interlocking tetrahedra pointing in opposite directions. Used in various spiritual traditions, it symbolizes transformation, life energy, and the link between body and spirit.
