Larimar: the Caribbean's secret stone — origin, properties and uses

If you have ever seen a stone that seems to carry the sea within it, you were probably looking at a larimar. Its blue and turquoise tones, with white veins that evoke the waves, make it one of the most recognisable and sought-after gems in the world. But what few people know is that it only exists in one place on the planet.

What is larimar?

Larimar is a semi-precious stone in sky blue, turquoise or sea green, with white patterns that mimic the movement of the ocean. Its appearance is soft and serene, almost as if each piece were a small window onto the Caribbean Sea.

It is a rare variety of pectolite, a mineral found in many parts of the world, but which only in the Dominican Republic takes on that characteristic blue. The colour is produced by the presence of copper in its composition, and it is precisely this rarity that makes it so special.

In terms of its physical appearance, larimar is:

  • Opaque or slightly translucent
  • Smooth and silky to the touch once polished
  • Of medium hardness, which makes it well suited to jewellery work
  • Variable in colour intensity: from pale blue to deep volcanic blue, the latter being the most prized

The discovery of larimar: a story with a name

Although local communities in the Dominican Republic had known this stone for generations, the world did not learn of its existence until 1974. That year, a Dominican craftsman named Miguel Méndez rediscovered it by following fragments carried by a river down to the coast.

It was he who gave it its name: he combined Larissa, his daughter's name, with mar (sea), in honour of the ocean surrounding the island. And so larimar was born — a name as poetic as the stone itself.

Interestingly, years earlier, in 1916, a Spanish priest had applied to the Dominican government for permission to mine a blue mineral in the area — but the application was filed away and forgotten for decades. Larimar waited patiently for someone to find it.

Where is larimar found in the world?

Here is one of the most surprising facts about this stone: larimar is mined in only one place on the planet. The mine is located in the province of Barahona, in the southwest of the Dominican Republic, in a remote and hard-to-reach area known as Los Chupaderos.

This geographical exclusivity is the main reason for its value. There is no larimar in any other country, on any other continent. Every piece that exists in the world comes from that same corner of the Caribbean.

How larimar is extracted

The extraction of larimar is surprisingly artisanal. There are no large machines or industrial operations. The miners, known as larimareros, work with basic tools.

It is hard, physical and slow work. Each extracted block is inspected by hand to identify the areas with the best colour and quality. Most of the material is discarded — only a small fraction has sufficient quality to become a jewel.

This method of extraction, though limited, has a far smaller environmental impact than industrial mining and keeps alive a local tradition that provides work for communities in the area.

From block to jewel: how larimar is worked

Once extracted, larimar is cut, shaped and polished by hand. Being a stone of medium hardness, it responds well to artisanal work and allows for varied forms: oval cabochons, irregular pieces that respect the natural shape, pendants, rings and earrings.

Polishing is the moment when the stone reveals its full potential. The surface becomes smooth and bright, and the blues and whites gain depth. Dominican craftspeople are the undisputed masters of this technique, although today larimar is also worked in workshops around the world.

When assessing a piece, experts look for:

  • Intensity of blue — the deeper and more saturated, the more valuable
  • Vein pattern — the most harmonious designs command higher prices
  • Polish quality — it should be even and mark-free

The energetic properties of larimar: what is said

Beyond its beauty, larimar holds a special place in the world of crystal therapy and the energetic use of stones. Although these properties have no scientific basis, they form part of a tradition of use that many people find meaningful and beneficial.

Larimar is said to be a stone of:

  • Calm and serenity — associated with the water element and the sea, it is used to reduce stress and anxiety
  • Communication — linked to the throat chakra, it is considered to help express thoughts and emotions with clarity
  • Love and femininity — connected to maternal energy and compassion
  • Connection with the sea — some traditions call it "the stone of Atlantis", believing it holds the memory of civilisations lost beneath the ocean

Regardless of personal beliefs, what is undeniable is the visual effect it produces: looking at a larimar is something like gazing at the marine horizon. And that, in itself, is already a form of calm.

Where to find authentic larimar

Given its exclusive origin and growing popularity, the market is full of imitations. The best guarantee is to buy from specialist mineral shops with genuine knowledge of the provenance of their pieces. An authentic stone will always have that vivid, irregular blue that no glass or resin can fully replicate.

At Cristalljoia we work with hand-selected larimar, with particular attention to the quality of colour and the origin of each piece. Because a stone with this history deserves to be treated for what it is: something unique.
