Illite is a mineral of the micas group that is formed by the alteration or weathering of muscovite and feldspar. It is a phyllosilicate or layered silicate with a layered structure of silica tetrahedrons and alumina octahedrons. It is grey-white to silvery-white, greenish-gray, or sometimes other shades in color. It is common in sediments, soils, sedimentary clayey rocks, and metamorphic rocks. It has therapeutic properties and is used as a poultice to treat joint and tendon inflammation.
