ETYMOLOGY:  Its name comes from Calchedon, ancient city of Bithynia in Asia Minor.
 
CRYSTAL SYSTEM: Trigonal.
 
PRINCIPLE OF FORMATION: Primary.
 
MINERAL CLASS: Oxide, quartz group.
 
CHEMICAL FORMULA, MINERAL ELEMENTS: SiO2, silicon dioxide.

HARDNESS:  6.5 - 7  on the Mohs scale.

MINERALOGY: The chalcedony is a microcrystalline variety of silicon dioxide, it is a translucent milky blue agate. It forms in rock cavities of different kinds, especially lavas.

 

MYTHOLOGY: Since ancient chalcedony represented the air and water elements. As such I was used as a magical symbol of time and to deal with climate-related diseases (colds, circulatory problems) since ancient times is considered as the mineral chalcedony speakers. The fibrous structure gives chalcedony and hardness makes it ideal for carving.
