In 1789, Jacques Louis de Bournon described a mineral from a granite sample from Ipornobert in Forez, which he called "red-violet adamantine feldspar", and considered it a type of feldspar.

Later, Jean-Claude Delamétherie (1789) studied some samples brought from Spain to France by the mineral merchant Launoy and discovered that it was a new mineral, which he called "andalousite" (andalusite), thinking that it came from Andalusia.

However, these were from Castilla, from the town El Cardoso (Guadalajara, Spain).
