Amblygonite is a class 8 mineral (phosphate minerals) of the Strunz classification.

It was discovered in 1818 in Saxony by August Breithaupt inside pegmatite rocks, in which it was associated with tourmalines and topazes.

The name amblygonite comes from the Greek "amblys", which means "blunt" and from "gonia" or angle, referring to the fact that its cleavage angle barely differs from 90°, distinguishing it from this of the scapolite with which it was originally confused.
