The bronzite is an iron ore of the group of orthopyroxenes, a variety of enstatite with some iron, although not as much as hypersthene, belonging together with these two others to the orthorhombic series of the group.

In the variety of bronzite, (Mg2)SiO3, iron(II) oxide reaches from 12 to 30%, and even with more iron it becomes hypersthene.

Because of its beauty with submetallic reflections and color similar to bronze —hence its name— it has been used as an ornamental stone.
