The yellow color of some calcites can be caused by the presence of chemical elements such as iron. In particular, the presence of iron in the oxidized state (FeO) can give calcite a yellow or light brown hue.

The iron in the calcite can be incorporated during the geode formation process, when groundwater containing iron seeps in the cavity. Over time, the calcite precipitates in the cavity and adheres to the walls, along with the iron. The amount and distribution of iron in calcite can affect its color.
