During the Renaissance, renowned painters such as Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Titian, among others, used lapis lazuli to obtain the ultramarine blue pigment in their paintings. Ultramarine blue was one of the most prized and expensive colors of the time, as lapis lazuli was mainly imported from mines in Afghanistan and, due to its scarcity, its price was comparable to gold.
