ETYMOLOGY: From greek "petalon" = leaf, is due to its perfect exfoliation.

CRYSTAL SYSTEM: Monoclinic.

PRINCIPLE OF FORMATION: Primary.

CLASS MINERAL: Silicates.

CHEMICAL FORMULA, MINERAL ELEMENTS: Li [AlSi4O10].

HARDNESS:  6.5 on the Mohs scale.

FIELDS: Australia, Brazil, Italy, Namibia, Sweden, Zimbabwe, Madagascar.

 
 

MINERALOGY: Found in pegmatitic granitic rocks, their appearance varies between colorless, gray, yellow, yellow-gray and white, with listings columnar crystals and masses, commonly associated minerals: spodumene, lepidolite, quartz, albite, microcline and tourmaline. It appears in pegmatite associated spodumene and has a composition similar to this.

 

MYTHOLOGY: It was discovered in 1800 on the island of Utö, Haninge, Sweden. The petalite is also known as castorita.
