During the mining rush in the 19th century in California, lepidolite gained some popularity. Although it was initially mined for other minerals, miners discovered that lepidolite contained lithium, an element then used in the manufacture of glass and ceramics. This unexpected finding led to a brief period of interest in lepidolite as a source of lithium before more efficient methods were developed to obtain this element.
