ETYMOLOGY: In honor of the british chemist and mineralogist James. Smithson

CRYSTAL SYSTEM: Trigonal.

PRINCIPLE OF FORMATION: Secondary.

CLASS MINERAL: Carbonates.

CHEMICAL FORMULA, MINERAL ELEMENTS: ZnCO3.

HARDNESS: 5 on the Mohs scale.

FIELDS: Australia, Greece, Italy, Mexico, Namibia, Spain, USA (New Mexico).

 

MINERALOGY: It is formed by alteration of primary minerals of zinc, particularly sphalerite. It comes in reniform, stalactite and earthy masses, usually with zinc deposits in limestones associated with sphalerite, galena, hemimorfita, cerusita, limonite, the different colors presented are due to impurities, if iron impurities take a green tint blue, if cobalt turns pink and if they are making cadmium yellow.

 

MYTHOLOGY: In the town of Laurium (Greece) is famous for its ornamental smithsonitas, Smithsonite, named in honor of James Smithson (1754- 1829). Smithson showed that carbonate minerals zinc carbonate was real and not zinc oxide, mineralogists the English called this mineral calamine mine in Broken Hill (Zambia) are the most beautiful in smithsonita crystals.
