ETYMOLOGY: In honor of the discoverer japanese Kenichi Sugi.

CRYSTAL SYSTEM: Hexagonal.

PRINCIPLE OF FORMATION: Primary.

CLASS MINERAL: Ciclosilicatos.

CHEMICAL FORMULA, MINERAL ELEMENTS: KNa2Li3 (Fe, Mn, Al) 2Si12O30.

HARDNESS: 6 - 6.5 on the Mohs scale.

MINERALOGY: The Sugilite is primarily formed from acid pegmatite magmas, and metamorphosed manganese deposits laminates. Rarely it found as crystals, usually this en masse, sugilite colors include all shades of purple, from lilac to plum shades including magenta, purple and reddish purple. Sugilite specimens often contain a black matrix and red or yellow spots, since the mineral sugilite comes in yellow and violet, pale pink and reddish brown and violet.


MYTHOLOGY: It was discovered in 1944 in Iwagi in Ehime (Japan), being named in honor of Ken-ichi Sugi, Japanese petrologist. In 1979 a large reservoir quality sugilite a manganese mine southeast of the Kalahari Desert in South Africa found.
