Unlike many minerals, obsidian does not have a crystalline structure due to how quickly lava cools. This property gives it a unique glassy-glossy texture. Variations in its composition can produce different colors, from the most common black to shades of green, brown, and even rainbow obsidian that displays color banding due to the inclusion of water bubbles or impurities. Obsidian is also a study material in volcanology, since its composition can reveal information about the history of specific volcanic eruptions.
