ETYMOLOGY: Because of the composition, vanadium is a metal containing this mineral.

CRYSTAL SYSTEM: Hexagonal.

PRINCIPLE OF FORMATION: Secondary.

CLASS MINERAL: Vanadates.

CHEMICAL FORMULA, MINERAL ELEMENTS: Pb5 (VO 4) 3 Cl.
 
HARDNESS: 3.5 - 4   on the Mohs scale.

FIELDS: Morocco, Zambia, Mexico, USA.

 
 

MINERALOGY: The vanadinite is a rare mineral of secondary origin, which lies in the oxidation zone of the veins of lead found in arid climates, the result of altering sulfides and vanádicos silicates, located in gangue ( the material that is discarded to extract ore an ore, for lack of economic value or too expensive to use) and the host rock of the deposit. It characterized by the shape of their prismatic crystals, its high brightness and its specific weight.

 


MYTHOLOGY: The first discovered in 1830 in Zimapán (Mexico) was by Professor A.M. from Rio, he was a professor at the School of Mines in Mexico. The vanadium was discovered by scientist and naturalist Spanish Andrés Manuel del Río, who call him synonymous with "brown lead", in 1830 the Swedish chemist Nils Gabriel Sefström will change the name to vanadinita. The Vanadinite is named after the goddess of beauty in Scandinavian mythology "Vanadis".
