ETYMOLOGY: Comes from the latin "variscia" is the former name of the city of Vogtland (Germany), which will be first described.

CRYSTAL SYSTEM: Rhombic.

PRINCIPLE OF FORMATION: Secondary.

HARDNESS: 4 - 5  on the Mohs scale.

MINERALOGY: The variscita secondarily in the earth's surface due to erosion of rocks rich in aluminum under the influence of rainwater containing phosphoric acid. The variscita is deposited filling the crevices of rocks, usually occurs in massive nodular aggregates, often with brown mexclada matrix, associated minerals include apatite, chalcedony, limonite, wavellita.

 

MYTHOLOGY: The mines of Gavá (Baix Llobregat Catalonia) were exploited to the Neolithic (3.500aC) for the production of ornamental objects, abundant outcrops of variscita found in Palazuelo in the caves and in the silurian stratifications of Sinformes Alcañices (Zamora in Spain). In the year of 77, Pliny the Elder in his Naturalis Historia speaks of a mineral: "... the callais, which is pale green ... referring to variscita.
