According to Greek mythology, amethyst originates from a legend involving the goddess Artemis and a young man named Amethyst.

The story goes that Amethyst was a very beautiful young man who aroused the interest of the god Dionysus, the god of wine and drunkenness. Dionysus tried to seduce Amethyst, but the latter, who was devoted to the goddess Artemis, rejected his advances.

In his fury, Dionysus decided to punish Amethyst by turning him into a crystal statue. The goddess Artemis, upon learning what had happened, took pity on the young man and decided to intervene.

Thus, Artemis turned Amethyst into a purple quartz stone to protect it from Dionysus. Since then, amethyst has been considered a protective mineral against drunkenness.
