Moldavite Silver Pendant: the gem born from an impact

Moldavite is one of the most singular pieces you can carry with you: it is not a mineral in the strict sense, but a tektite, a natural glass of an intense bottle green formed by the impact of a meteorite around 15 million years ago. Set in sterling silver, its translucent colour and characteristic rough texture become the centre of attention of any outfit.

What makes moldavite unique? It is one of the very few gems whose origin is linked to an extraterrestrial impact. Its etched surface, with natural grooves and dimples, is the signature of the molten rock flying and cooling in the air.

The origin: an impact that crossed two countries

Approximately 15 million years ago, a large meteorite struck what is now Nördlingen (Bavaria, Germany), forming the Ries crater. The extreme heat of the explosion melted the Earth's rocks and projected drops of molten material over great distances. Those drops cooled in mid-flight and fell in the region of Bohemia (present-day Czech Republic).

The name comes from the Moldau river (Vltava in Czech), which runs through the area where most of the pieces are found. Curiously, it has nothing to do with the country Moldova.

Did you know? Moldavite belongs to a group of tektites spread across different areas of the planet, but it is the only one with a translucent green tone suitable for jewellery. Its rarity increases year after year, as it comes from very specific and limited deposits.

Features of this piece

  • Setting material: sterling silver.
  • Gem: natural moldavite, tektite of translucent green colour.
  • Texture: natural etched surface, with relief unique to each piece.
  • Unique piece: due to its natural origin, no two moldavites are identical in shape, size or etching.

Each pendant is unrepeatable. As a natural glass formed by an unrepeatable geological phenomenon, the piece you receive will have its own shape, tone and texture. That is what makes it a truly personal piece of jewellery.

Geological fact: the Ries crater, origin of moldavite, is so singular that it was once used for astronaut training, due to its geology resembling the lunar surface.

Frequently asked questions

About moldavite

Is moldavite a meteorite?

Not exactly: it is terrestrial matter transformed by a meteorite impact. The meteorite melted the surface rocks, and those rocks, once molten, gave rise to moldavite. That is why it is said to have been born from a meteorite, but is not one.

Why is each piece different?

Because its shape was defined during the flight and cooling of the molten rock. The grooves and dimples on the surface are natural; no two are ever alike.

How should I care for the pendant?

As it is a natural glass, it is advisable to avoid knocks and drops onto hard surfaces. Clean it with a soft cloth and store it separately to protect both the gem and the sterling silver of the setting.
