Moonstone: the blue sheen that's actually two minerals intertwined

What this gem really is, why its glow seems to float beneath the surface, and what role adularia plays in its story

Moonstone is one of those gems that seems to have light of its own: move it between your fingers and a white or bluish veil glides across its surface, as if there were an illuminated mist trapped inside.

This appearance, so hard to photograph and yet so easy to recognize in person, has given it a prominent place in jewelry from ancient Rome to Art Nouveau, by way of traditional India. But what exactly is it from a mineralogical point of view? Is it a mineral in its own right, or just a variety of something else? And above all, why does it glow like that?

Is it a mineral or not?

Moonstone belongs to the feldspar group, the most abundant mineral family in Earth's crust: feldspars are estimated to make up around 40% of the entire crust.

Specifically, it's orthoclase (a potassium aluminum silicate) that becomes interlaced during formation with microscopic layers of albite, a different feldspar. When magma cools very slowly inside igneous rocks like granite or pegmatites, these two feldspars —initially mixed within a single crystal— gradually separate into alternating, parallel sheets as the temperature drops.

It's a similar case to other stones we know by a trade name that actually describes an appearance or an effect, rather than a closed mineral species.

Where the blue sheen comes from

The effect is called adularescence, and its cause is purely physical: light entering the stone meets those alternating feldspar layers and scatters between them, as if passing through a very fine filter.

The result is that milky, shifting glow that seems to swim beneath the surface as the gem is turned, very different from the fixed sparkle of a normally faceted stone. That's why moonstone is almost never cut in facets: it's polished into a cabochon (a smooth, curved surface), which best reveals that inner movement of light.

Why are some blue and others white? the color of the sheen depends on the thickness of those internal layers. The thinner they are, the more they scatter light toward blue, producing the coveted electric-blue glow. When the layers are thicker, the sheen turns white or grey, and duller.

That's why the finest pieces of blue moonstone, transparent and with a well-defined sheen, fetch prices far above those of the white or milky varieties, which are much more common and affordable.

A gem with history, from ancient Rome

The Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder already wrote about this stone in the 1st century AD, convinced that its sheen changed with the phases of the moon —a belief that stayed alive in Europe well into the 16th century.

The Greeks called it "Aphroselene": the fusion of Aphrodite and Selene.

Greeks and Romans associated it with lunar deities, and the Romans linked it to Diana. It was commonly used in Roman rings, cameos and intaglios for generations.

In medieval Europe it was known as a stone tied to dreams, and some texts of the period recommended placing it under the pillow.

In India, meanwhile, moonstone has traditionally held a prominent place as a sacred stone: it was given as a wedding gift symbolizing marital harmony, a custom that in some regions survives to this day.

Its great revival in the West came at the end of the 19th century, when the Art Nouveau movement turned it into one of its favorite gems. Designers like René Lalique incorporated it into brooches, pendants and hair combs alongside enamel and nature-inspired forms, precisely because its soft, shifting glow suited that aesthetic better than the rigid brilliance of a well-cut diamond.

Today, moonstone is also one of the stones associated with June as a birthstone, alongside pearl.

Fun fact: in Sri Lankan Buddhist architecture there's a decorative element called a sandakada pahana ("moonstone"), a carved semicircular slab placed at the foot of staircases and temple entrances, with concentric rings of animals and floral motifs. The name is a coincidence with the gem's, not a reference to the mineral: it alludes to the slab's semicircular shape, which evokes a full moon seen on the horizon.

Adularia: the name that comes from a Swiss mountain

The technical name for moonstone's sheen, adularescence, doesn't come from the moon but from a very specific place: the Adula massif, in the Swiss Alps, on the border with Italy.

It was in those mountains that, starting in the 18th century, mineralogists documented the first crystals of this type of feldspar with that characteristic bluish sheen, and from there both the variety name "adularia" and the optical phenomenon it describes took their name.

When an old catalog refers to "adularia" instead of moonstone, it's not a mistake: it's its original name.

Over time, as moonstone deposits were discovered elsewhere in the world, the gemological term "moonstone" became widespread and is now the one used almost exclusively in jewelry, while "adularia" has remained more of a historical curiosity and the name still favored by some collectors and geologists.

Where it's found

The historic deposits are in the Alps (Switzerland, Austria, Italy, France), but today gem-quality moonstone —especially the blue-sheen kind— comes mainly from Sri Lanka, considered the world's reference source for decades.

There are also important deposits in India, Myanmar, Madagascar, Brazil and the United States, each with its own variations in background color (from white and grey to peach or greenish tones) and sheen intensity.

Being a relatively soft feldspar (somewhat harder than window glass, but considerably softer than quartz), moonstone is usually set in earrings, pendants or rings with a mount that protects it from knocks.

It's best to avoid contact with harsh cleaning products or everyday wear in rings exposed to constant friction.
