How selenite is formed
The formation of selenite is directly linked to the evaporation of water in environments rich in calcium sulfate. This process mainly occurs in saline lakes, inland seas and evaporitic regions.
As water gradually evaporates, dissolved minerals become more concentrated. Under conditions of stable temperature and minimal geological disturbance, calcium sulfate slowly crystallizes, allowing large gypsum crystals, including selenite, to grow.
The slowness of this process is essential: the more gradually the crystals form, the larger and clearer they can become, as seen in some exceptional deposits.
